Frequently Asked Questions

Luggage

Whilst it can be tempting to pack everything, taking the right amount of luggage is crucial to a Diamond Rail Holiday. Porterage is not included so you will need to lift your own case on and off trains, onto luggage racks and carry it some distance between platforms, stations and hotels. We therefore recommend one small suitcase or hold-all (wheels are an advantage) and one piece of hand luggage per person. For itineraries which include overnight train journeys we recommend you to pack toiletries in your hand luggage.

What to wear

Your comfort is of key importance. Casual clothing is acceptable on all of our holidays and we recommend layers and sturdy shoes during the day. Some people do like to dress more formally in the evenings, particularly for the Captains party night on cruises.

Fully Escorted

All of our holidays are fully escorted by knowledgeable Tour Managers who meet you at London St Pancras International and stay with you throughout. With somebody else in charge of all the arrangements you are free to relax and enjoy yourself; after all, you are on holiday!

Value for money

We include as much as possible in the price of your holiday; return rail from London St Pancras International, accommodation, meals, main visits with at least one excursion for every holiday and a tour manager to ensure everything we have planned runs smoothly. Each itinerary details exactly what is included so you know what you are getting.

Optional Excursions

We have hand-picked a fine selection of excursions for you to enhance your holiday experience. The majority of these are by train, some are by coach or boat – details are shown in each itinerary. Experience has taught us that some people like to explore independently, so by making our excursions optional you have this choice. But experienced travellers know that it is difficult to do the same excursions at the same price! We would therefore advise you to book as soon as possible as they fill up quickly and may not be available nearer to departure or whilst you are away.

Hotels

When it comes to booking a hotel your best interests are our priority; convenient location, comfortable facilities and value for money. All the hotels we use are personally vetted by our staff before departure, so we can be sure you will receive a warm welcome and good service during your stay. For each itinerary a detailed description of the hotel is given.

Extend your holiday

We offer hotel accommodation close to St Pancras International so you can add an extra day, or more, to your holiday. Why not arrive in London a day early and explore this fascinating capital city, or end your holiday with a relaxing evening in a fine restaurant. Accommodation is on a request basis - simply call and speak to one of our Holiday Advisors who will be happy to help you.

Regional Rail

On a number of our holidays you can enjoy the benefits of regional rail travel and arrive at London St Pancras International relaxed and ready for your onward adventure. For further information please contact our Holiday Advisors who will be happy to help. Please note: Regional rail departures are on request and subject to availability and your Tour Manager will meet you at London St Pancras International Station.

How will the change affect the sale of my holiday?

Your contract will now be with our South African branch who are responsible for the fulfilment of your holiday. You will not notice any change in the price of the product being sold or the level of the service being provided to you. Our UK sales and marketing office will be responsible for taking your booking on behalf of our South African office regardless of whether you book online or via our UK call centre. They will also be available to deal with any questions or queries you might have prior to your tour departing.

Will my holiday still be protected?

As the Cape Town office is a branch of Diamond Shortbreak Holidays Ltd you will still benefit from the same level of consumer protection as you would have had previously when the contract was with the UK office.

Mobility

Due to the nature of our holidays, they can be physically demanding – carrying your own luggage, getting on/off trains, changing platforms, walking to hotels, sometimes over uneven or cobbled ground. We therefore strongly recommend you to check with us if you are in any doubt as to the suitability of a holiday, particularly if you have a disability or limited mobility.

Eurostar

Since its introduction over a decade ago, this high-speed train service has put Europe on our doorstep and fast become one of the most popular ways to travel. Departure times range from early morning to mid afternoon, with check in closing at leadt 1 hour before the train departs, making this a really convenient way to travel.

High-speed trains

Travelling across Europe has never been easier thanks to the innovative high-speed trains we see today. The French TGV, German ICE and International Thalys offer the ultimate in high-speed rail travel, using the latest technology and providing a highly reliable service thanks to their dedicated tracks linking major cities.

Local Trains

Local rail services connect smaller towns and villages, often following a more scenic route.

Overnight sleeper trains

Arrive at your destination refreshed. This is a most convenient way to relax and travel hundreds of miles at the same time. Sleeper carriages are typically a 2 berth cabin with a washbasin and a WC in each carriage.
